NASA launches communication satellite

NASA on Thursday launched a new communication satellite to stay in touch with its space station astronauts and relay more Hubble telescope images.

An unmanned Atlas V rocket blasted into the starry night sky carrying the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite.

This is the 11th TDRS satellite to be launched by NASA.

The space agency uses the orbiting network to communicate with astronauts living on the International Space Station.

The first TDRS spacecraft flew in 1983; it recently was retired along with No. 4. The second was lost aboard space shuttle Challenger in 1986; Monday marked the 27th anniversary of the launch disaster.

This newest third-generation TDRS carries the letter K designation. Once it begins working, it will become TDRS-11.

It will take two weeks for the satellite to reach its intended 22,300-mile-high orbit. Testing will last a few months.

NASA estimates the satellite costs between $ 350 million and $ 400 million. Another TDRS spacecraft, L in the series, will be launched next year.

NASA wants at least seven TDRS satellites working in orbit at any one time. The one launched today will make eight.

Tamannaah

Tamannaah Bhatia (born 21 December 1989[2]) is an Indian film actress and model,[3] who performs under the mononym Tamannaah and predominantly appears in South Indian cinema. In 2005, she made her acting debut in the Bollywood film, Chand Sa Roshan Chehra, before working in the major South Indian film industries. Also in 2005, Tamannaah made her Telugu debut in Sri, and in the following year she appeared in her first Tamil film, Kedi. In 2007, she starred in two college-life-based drama films, Happy Days in Telugu and Kalloori in Tamil, which both earned her critical acclaim.

After being part of the several commercially successful films, including Padikathavan (2009), Ayan (2009), Paiyaa (2010) and Siruthai (2011), she emerged a leading contemporary actresses in Kollywood and became informally referred to as the "Queen of Kollywood".[3][4] She staged a successful comeback in Tollywood in 2011 with the romance film 100% Love (2011), which won her several accolades. She was subsequently signed for several high-profile projects like Oosaravelli (2011). With blockbusters Rachcha (2012), and recent blockbuster Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu (2012) she established herself as one of Tollywood's leading contemporary actresses.[5]

Early life

Tamannaah was born on 21 December 1989 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, to Santhosh and Rajani Bhatia and she has an elder brother, Anand. Her father is a financial consultant. She is of Sindhi descent.[3] She did her schooling in Maneckji Cooper Educational Trust School, Juhu, Mumbai whilst she is currently pursuing a BA degree at National College, Mumbai through distance education. She later changed her screen name for numerological reasons, varying it slightly to Tamannaah.[6][7] She has been working since the age of 13 since she was spotted at her school’s annual day function and offered the lead role which she took up. She also appeared in the music video of Lafzon Mein Keh Na Saku by Abhijeet Sawant, the winner of the first Indian Idol.

Career

Early career (2005-2008)

Tamannaah started her acting career in 2005, essaying the female lead role in Chand Sa Roshan Chehra, her only Hindi film to date. The same year, she debuted in Telugu cinema in Sri, playing the leading female role opposite Manoj Kumar. In 2006, she made her debut in the Tamil film industry in Kedi, produced by A. M. Rathnam, along with Ravi Krishna and another newcomer, Ileana D'Cruz. In 2007, she had three releases. After her role in the unsuccessful Vyapari, Tamannaah rose to popularity with the Sekhar Kammula-directed Telugu film Happy Days which received positive reviews and became her first major box office success. Her next release was the Tamil drama film Kalloori, directed by Balaji Sakthivel, that won her accolades and critical acclaim in Tamil as well. In 2008, Tamannaah again had three releases, appearing only in cameo roles in two of them.

Stardom in Kollywood (2009-2010)

In 2009, she received box office success with Padikathavan, with Dhanush. Her next release was a Telugu movie Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam opposite Siddharth. It became a success and she was praised for her refreshing performance.[8][9] Her next film was Ananda Tandavam, which sank without a trace although her performance was praised by critics. Her next Tamil film Ayan alongside Suriya became a huge blockbuster and made her a leading star in the Tamil film industry. Her successive release Kandein Kadhalai, which was a remake of the 2007 Hindi blockbuster Jab We Met, was considered a moderate success. She did the role originally played by Kareena Kapoor and was praised by critics for her performance.

Assam: Powerful blast on railway tracks in Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar: Passengers of the Howrah-Guwahati down Garibrath Express had a providential escape on Sunday when a powerful bomb exploded on the railway tracks minutes after it passed Goabari in lower Assam's Kokrajhar district. There was no casualty or injury.
The bomb suspected to have been planted by the anti-talk faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) exploded at 1:10 am two minutes after the train passed the area between Gossaigaon and Fakiragram, police said. The blast blew away three feet of railway track and left a two feet deep crater at the spot, they said.
Initially, train services were affected for about five hours. But the line was repaired and train services restored in the morning. As the railway line is a double track one, the trains scheduled to pass over the damaged track were diverted to the adjacent one, railway sources said. Security forces have launched a search operation to nab the ultras.

Thermo Nuclear Weapon

A thermonuclear weapon is a nuclear weapon design that uses the heat generated by a fission bomb to compress a nuclear fusion stage. This indirectly results in a greatly increased energy yield—explosive "power". It is colloquially referred to as a hydrogen bomb or H-bomb because it employs hydrogen fusion, though in most applications the majority of its destructive energy comes from uranium fission, not hydrogen fusion by itself. The fusion stage in such weapons is required to efficiently cause the large quantities of fission characteristic of most thermonuclear weapons.[1]

The concept of the thermonuclear weapon was first developed and used in 1952 and has since been used in most of the world's nuclear weapons.[2] The modern design of all thermonuclear weapons in the United States is known as the Teller-Ulam design for its two chief contributors, Edward Teller and Stanislaw Ulam, who developed it in 1951 for the U.S., with certain concepts developed with the contribution of John von Neumann. The first test of this principle was the "Ivy Mike" nuclear test in 1952, conducted by the United States. In the Soviet Union, the design was independently developed and known as Andrei Sakharov's "Third Idea", first tested in 1955. Similar devices were developed by the United Kingdom, China, and France, though no specific code names are known for their designs.

As thermonuclear weapons represent the most efficient design for weapon energy yield in weapons with yields above 50 kilotons, today virtually all the nuclear weapons deployed by the five nuclear-weapon states under the NPT are thermonuclear weapons using the Teller–Ulam design.[3]

The essential features of the mature thermonuclear weapon design, which officially remained secret for nearly three decades, are: 1) separation of stages into a triggering "primary" explosive and a much more powerful "secondary" explosive, 2) compression of the secondary by X-rays coming from nuclear fission in the primary, a process called the "radiation implosion" of the secondary, and 3) heating of the secondary, after cold compression, by a second fission explosion inside the secondary.

The radiation implosion mechanism is a heat engine exploiting the temperature difference between the secondary's hot, surrounding radiation channel and its relatively cool interior. This temperature difference is briefly maintained by a massive heat barrier called the "pusher", which also serves as an implosion tamper, increasing and prolonging the compression of the secondary. If made of uranium—and it usually is—it can capture neutrons produced by the fusion reaction and undergo fission itself, increasing the overall explosive yield. In many Teller–Ulam weapons, fission of the pusher dominates the explosion and produces radioactive fission product fallout.

Delhi gang-rape case: Five accused plead not guilty

Five men pleaded not guilty on Saturday to charges they raped and murdered a trainee physiotherapist in New Delhi, in a case that led to a shake-up of laws against sexual crimes after protests about a rising number of attacks on women.

Police say the gang lured the 23-year-old woman onto a bus, where they repeatedly raped and assaulted her with a metal bar before throwing her bleeding onto a highway. She died of internal injuries two weeks after the December 16 attack. A Reuters witness saw the men file into the court room with their faces covered, where lawyers in the case said they were read thirteen charges including murder, which carries a maximum penalty of death.

They left after 15 minutes. "After the judge read out the charges, the five pleaded not guilty and walked out" said A.P. Singh, a lawyer defending two of the accused, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur. Singh said the prosecution will call three witnesses to the next hearing on Tuesday, which is the formal start of the trial.

The prosecution says it has strong evidence against the five men including blood stained clothing, DNA matches, mobile phone records, confessions and eye-witness statements. Singh says Sharma was never on the bus and Thakur was hiding beneath a seat and never took part in the crime.

The other men - brothers Ram and Mukesh Singh and Pawan Kumar - are represented by two other lawyers. Mukesh Singh has replaced a lawyer who claimed his client was tortured in police custody, and no longer claims mistreatment. A sixth person police say was part of the gang that attacked the woman and her friend is a juvenile and will be tried separately.

The brutality of the attack was shocking even to a nation inured to a rising wave of sexual crimes against women. Thousands of young protesters took to the streets in the weeks that followed. In response to the public outcry, on Friday the cabinet fast-tracked new, tougher penalties for sex crimes.

Under the new rules, due to be signed into law by the president in the coming days, gang rape that leads to death will be punishable by death while minimum penalties will be raised to 20 years for gang rape and rape of a minor. The laws must later be ratified by parliament.
